“Thank you,” Marie said to the driver when she got off the bus.

The man didn’t speak, but nodded at her instead. Bus drivers seemed to be among the only people who appreciated Marie’s kindness. Fuck the rest of them, with just days before she gave birth, she couldn’t be bothered to reach out to anyone else.

When she got off the bus into the bitter winter’s night, she faced the estate. Despite everything playing out exactly as it had done every other time she’d gotten off the bus, something felt strange tonight. Maybe just paranoia, but something seemed a little darker; almost as if the tension in the air had an electric charge.

Marie gripped her gun in her bag, looked around, and stepped into the estate.

By the time she’d gotten halfway down the first alley, Marie heard the men behind her. Nothing unusual there. A glance behind and she saw six men in total, all of them focused on her, and all of them wore the horrible fucking masks.

Sure, she had a gun, but maybe they had them too. After the past few exhausting days, she had to fight against the lethargy in her muscles as she sped up. She needed to get home.

When she rounded the next corner, Marie could have gone one of two ways. Her normal route home went down the alleyway on the right, and it looked clear. She glanced to the left anyway. A sharp chill snapped through her, and she opened her mouth in a silent scream. A man—half swallowed by the darkness of the alleyway—stared back at her. Tall and broad, maybe it was the man who always followed her. Hard to tell when he had a mask on and a long butcher’s apron that covered his front. Shadows hid the rest of him.

The man—his white apron red and slick with blood—stood with a corpse suspended behind him. The thing hung from a chain that protruded from a meat hook in the wall. Even in the dark, Marie could see the stretchy tendrils of blood that bungeed off the body and dripped onto the ground. Fuck knows what kind of creature it had been, but it hadn’t been dead long.

About the size of a dog, she looked from its feet all the way down its body. When she got to its face, she drew a sharp and involuntary breath that snapped through the tight space. “Fuck.” Regardless of the men who closed in behind her, she couldn’t move. Amongst all the red flesh and blood, she saw the shock white of two eyeballs—human eyes. It seemed obvious now that she looked at it. Maybe she’d just not wanted to see it at first. But now those wide eyes—glazed from where the life had left them—stared directly at her; she couldn’t avoid the fact.

With her hand clamped over her mouth, she shook her head. “How could you?” she said, her voice muffled by her hand.

The man in the mask tilted his head to the side as he watched her.
